Sleeping in a château in Normandy
A night, or a weekend, in a stone château in Calvados: six bedrooms, forty-two hectares of grounds, Bayeux half an hour away and Paris three hours by road. Here is what “sleeping in a château” means here, hour by hour — what you will find, and what you will not.
What “sleeping in a château” means here
The Bû is not a hotel fitted into a château: it is a stone house with six bedrooms. The walls, the beams, the fireplaces and the windows were left where they were; every bedroom is different, and all of them look onto the grounds or the meadows. At night it is properly dark — you can see the stars from the courtyard.
- Six bedrooms in three sizes, each named after a flower of the grounds: Cytise, Hibiscus, Glycine, Magnolia, Cornus, Camélia.
- The grounds are open at all times: a five-hundred-and-sixty-metre drive, two oaks in the middle of the meadow, the big pond and its ducks, a cider orchard planted before 1926.
- No restaurant in the evening — the château serves breakfast only. The tables we like are ten minutes away.
- Open all year round, winter included.
A night at the château, hour by hour
This is how a night here goes, for two people arriving on a Saturday.
-
4 pm – 10 pm: arrival
You arrive whenever you like between 4 pm and 10 pm, park in the courtyard — free, no booking needed — and go up. Before dark, a turn of the grounds: the drive, the pond behind the house, the formal garden in front. The ducks and the carp let themselves be fed.
-
Evening: dinner out
The château serves neither lunch nor dinner. In Villers-Bocage, ten minutes away, a village brasserie and a wood-fired pizzeria; in Bayeux, half an hour away, bistros and a MICHELIN Guide table facing the cathedral — book ahead. The list, with phone numbers, is on the Restaurant page, and it downloads as a PDF.

The night
Thick walls, no road to hear, and a sky without lights: “huge rooms” and “quiet” are the words that come up most in the reviews. The Superior bedrooms have their original fireplace; the Deluxe, under the roof timbers, a balcony over the garden and the pond.
-
8 am – 10 am: breakfast, then check-out before 11 am
It is served in the ground-floor dining room, home-made: bread and pastries, jams and honey, yoghurts, regional cheese and charcuterie, eggs to order, fresh fruit, cakes. €15 per adult, €8 from 13 to 17, free before that. Add it when you book (“Breakfast included”) or say so the evening before. Check-out before 11 am — and the day is ahead of you.
The weekend: everything is half an hour away
The château sits in the middle of Calvados: you come back here to sleep, and every day starts from here.
- Bayeux, half an hour away — the cathedral, the lanes along the Aure, the Saturday-morning market. The Tapestry itself cannot be seen before October 2027: its museum is being rebuilt.
- The D-Day beaches, under an hour away — Arromanches, Longues-sur-Mer, the American cemetery, Omaha, Pointe du Hoc, in that order: the day is described here.
- Caen and its Mémorial, thirty minutes away, for the Sunday; and if you stay two nights, Honfleur and the Côte Fleurie at 1 h 15, Mont-Saint-Michel at two hours — the five days already mapped out.
The bedrooms
Three sizes, six bedrooms, a cot possible in all of them. Details, photographs and availability are on the rooms page.
- Standard — 25 m², for two, under the beams, with a corner to read in. Shower. Cytise looks onto the grounds, Hibiscus onto the pond.
- Superior — 40 m², up to three (four in Glycine), original fireplace, French window onto the formal garden. Bath.
- Deluxe — 44 m², up to five, under the roof timbers, sitting area and balcony over the garden and the pond. Bath, separate WC.
